Fitchburg State Breezes Past MCLA, 73-43

Falcons earn fifth conference victory behind Fahey's 20 point effort

FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 8, 2014) – Senior Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass.) collected 20 points and six rebounds as the Fitchburg State women's basketball team posted a convincing 73-43 victory over the Trailblazers of MCLA in MASCAC action this afternoon.

Fahey led the Falcons, shooting 8-of-11 for the contest, while adding a pair of steals, assists and blocks. Junior Laura Cote (Ashby, Mass.) was also in double figures with 12 points, while classmates Megan Wodzinski (Littleton, Mass.) and Rebecca Fluet (Fitchburg, Mass.) chipped in with eight point apiece.

MCLA used a balanced attack throughout the contest with Courtney McLaughlin (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Kaitlyn Chenevert (Uxbridge, Mass.) leading with way with eight points apiece. Freshman Michaela Siver (Colchester, Vt.), classmate Kayla Hotaling (Ravena, N.Y.) and senior Danielle Scolpino (Bethel, Conn.) were also strong with six points each.

Fitchburg State jumped out to a 20 point lead after one period of play (38-18), using a 15-2 run to open the half. The Falcons were tenacious on the defensive side of the ball, causing 18 turnovers with eight steals through the period. Fahey posted a strong first half with a 13 point effort, while Fluet, Wodzinski and Cote added six points each. Hotaling led the Trailblazers with six points in the half.

In the second half, Fitchburg State continued to pour on the offense, going up by as much as 38 throughout the frame. Fahey continued her strong offensive output with seven points on 3-of-4 shooting, while nine other Falcons connected for scores.

Throughout the afternoon, Fitchburg State controlled all facets of the game, including rebounds (45-21), steals (15-11) and caused turnovers (32-29). The Falcons finished 30-of-62 from the floor (45.8%) with 80.0% shooting from the free-throw line, while MCLA was held to 22.0% shooting (13-of-59) and finished just 13-of-23 from the charity stripe.

Fitchburg State will be back in action next Saturday as it hosts Bridgewater State at 1 p.m.
