Early Run Propels Falcons Past MCLA, 66-47

Falcons go on early 16-0 run to push past MCLA in conference action

FITCHBURG, Mass.
- Fitchburg State University women's basketball forced 33 turnovers, while going an impressive 20-20 from the free throw line in route to a 66-47 victory over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletics Conference (MASCAC) tilt on Tuesday night.

The win gives the Falcons a 9-4 (2-1 MASCAC) record, while MCLA drops to 6-8 (0-3 MASCAC) on the season.

With three lead changes in the early minutes of the game, Fitchburg State proceeded on a 16-0 run to take a 22-7 lead at the 8:20 mark. The Falcons took a 19 point lead into halftime 39-20, going a perfect 14-14 from the free throw line and scoring 15 of their first half points off of Trailblazer turnovers.

The second half proved to be much of the same, with the hosts holding a double-digit advantage for the remainder of the contest. Despite out-rebounding the Falcons 46-37, MCLA was unable to cut the deficit to less than 14 points - which they did on three occasions in the final stanza.

The Falcons were led by senior guard Rebecca Fluet with 15 points, three rebounds, and four steals, while classmate Megan Wodzinski chipped in with 12 points. Junior forward Stephanie Leveillee contributed with a career-high eight points and eight rebounds in the winning effort.

MCLA's sophomore forward Kayla Hotaling had a team-high 11 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double, while sophomore guard Ashley Clawson had nine points, and classmate Courtney Durivage had 12 caroms in the loss.

Overall, FSU shot 22-61 (36.1%) from the field, while MCLA went 14-51 (27.5) from the floor. The Falcons held a 32-18 advantage in points in the paint, while their bench outshot the Trailblazers 18-11.

Fitchburg State will be back in action on Thursday as they travel to Rivier University for a 7:00 pm tipoff. The Green & Gold are looking to complete a two game sweep of their non-conference counterpart, as they defeated the Raiders 71-57 in Fitchburg on November 20th.  MCLA will be back in conference play on Saturday as they travel to Framingham State at 1:00 pm.
