Falcons Edge AMCATs 63-58 on Cote's Historic Night

Cote eclipses 1,000 point mark in Falcons non-conference win

FITCHBURG, Mass. - Laura Cote became the tenth member of the Fitchburg State women's basketball program to reach the 1,000-point mark in the Falcons 63-58 victory over Anna Maria College on Thursday evening.

Eight points shy of the milestone entering the contest, Cote set the milestone at the 15:45 mark of the second half with a jump shot just inside the perimeter. The senior guard finished with 16 points on the historic night.

The opening half saw five lead changes, with Fitchburg State going up by as many as 14 points with 6:16 remaining on a Megan Wodzinski layup. The AMCATS proceeded on a 19-2 run to end the half and held the Falcons scoreless for over four minutes to take a 31-28 lead into intermission.

Less than a minute into the second stanza the Falcons regained the lead and never relinquished it on a layup by senior center Kristen Enright. Anna Maria would bring the game to a 48-48 deadlock, but the Green & Gold responded with an 8-0 run to pull the game out of reach.

Wodzinski finished with a team-leading 20 points along with a game-high six assists for the Falcons, while senior guard Britney Payne chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds.

Senior forward Traffcia Warburton put in a stellar offensive effort for the AMCATS, registering a game-best 22 points, 16 caroms, and six steals despite the loss. Freshman guard Kristina Russo and sophomore guard Christina Gauvin were the only other visitors in double-digits in scoring with 10 points apiece.

Overall, Fitchburg State shot 47.1% (24-51) from the field, while the AMCATS countered shooting 20-50 (40%) from the floor. Anna Maria held a 38-30 edge in rebounds while FSU converted 25 of the AMCATS turnovers into 25 points in the offensive end.

Fitchburg State returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 14 as they travel to Bridgewater State at 1:00pm, while Anna Maria visits Lasell College the same day with a 1:00pm tipoff.
