Lancers Steer Past Fitchburg State, 61-48

Enright records double-double in conference setback 

FITCHBURG, Mass. - Fitchburg State University was defeated by Worcester State, 61-48, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Conference (MASCAC) women's basketball contest on Tuesday evening at the Parkinson Gymnasium.

After holding the lead for the majority of the opening half, the Lancers were able to extend their advantage to double-digits at the 4:17 mark of the first on a three pointer by senior guard Kiesha Jones.

The hosts proceeded on a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to two heading into intermission, 29-27. Senior forward Kristen Enright led the first stanza with a double-double, recording 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Falcons.

Worcester State went on a 14-0 run after both teams exchanged a pair of baskets to start the second half and jumped out to a game-high 17 point lead, 48-31 at the12:49 mark. The Falcons cut the deficit to as low as eight points with just over two minutes remaining on a jumper by senior guard Britney Payne, but the comeback attempt was little too late.

Enright was held scoreless in the second half, but tied for a team-lead of 12 points along with a game-high 17 boards. Classmates Rebecca Fluet and Laura Cote also chipped in with 12 points in the losing effort.

The Lancers were led by senior guard Julie Frankian with 26 points, who went 7-12 from the floor, while junior forward Bianca Langford contributed with 17 points and 14 caroms.

Overall, Fitchburg State was held to a mere 21% (17-81) from the field, while the Lancers shot 20-53 (37.7%) from the hardwood. The Falcons had a 56-44 advantage in rebounds, while forcing 23 turnovers on 13 steals.

The Falcons fall to 13-10 (4-7 MASCAC), while Worcester State improves to 15-9 (6-5 MASCAC) on the season and evens the series between the rival schools to 1-1 on the year.

The Green & Gold will wrap up the regular season schedule on Saturday as they host the conference-leading Westfield State on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 1:00 pm. Prior to tipoff the nine Fitchburg State seniors will be recognized. The Lancers will also take part in their final regular season contest on Saturday against Framingham State at 1:00 pm.
