Fitchburg State Absorbs an 85-34 Loss to Visiting League Rival Bridgewater State

FITCHBURG, Mass. - Bridgewater State junior forward Jennie Lindland scored 20 points and recorded nine steals to help propel her team past Fitchburg State, 85-34, in a MASCAC women's basketball clash at the Parkinson Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

For Fitchburg State, junior Shabeli Villa and senior Erika Schneider combined for 16 points in the loss. 

The visiting Bears opened up the game scoring 12 unanswered as Lindland started hot for Bridgewater State dropping six points in the opening four minutes of play. 

Schneider halted the scoreless streak for her team hitting the first two points for the Falcons with a lay-up in the paint and cutting the deficit to 10 in the first quarter. 

In the final six minutes of the quarter Bridgewater State pushed its lead up to 18 points scoring 15 in that time and finishing out the first stanza leading 27-9. 

The second quarter began like the first as the Bears were able to go on a 12-5 run with Lindland again proving to be the hot hand dropping another six points for Bridgewater State, who entered the break with a commanding 48-19 lead over the home team. 

Bridgewater State went on to control the entire second half, outscoring the Green and Gold 35-15 over the final 20 minutes to cinch the 85-34 victory and record their first league win of the season. 

Sophomore guard Christine Curran led bench scorers with 15 points in 12 minutes on court, going 5-of-8 from the floor and collecting four points from the charity stripe. 

Sophomore forward Catherine Loney came off the bench for Fitchburg State to drop five points and grab three rebounds in 11 minutes of action. 

Bridgewater State shot over 50.0% from the field, hitting 33-of-58 from the floor and going 7-of-20 (35.0%) from beyond the arc. 

Fitchburg State controlled the glass during the game corralling 29 total rebounds with 12 coming off the offensive glass. 

Fitchburg State (0-13; 0-2 MASCAC) will take on MASCAC rival Worcester State for the Sterling Cup at Clark University on January 16th starting at 1:00 p.m. 

Bridgewater State (4-10; 1-1 MASCAC) hosts Salem State in a conference match-up on Saturday January 16th starting at 1:00 p.m.
