Fitchburg State Upended By Worcester State, 74-35

Pelton and Guglielmello combine for 15 points for Falcons in MASCAC setback

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team dropped a 74-35 decision to the Lancers of Worcester State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this afternoon at Clark University.

In the opening quarter, Fitchburg State knotted the score at 5-5 early in the frame on a jumper form senior Erika Schneider and trey ball by junior guard Shabeli Villa with 8:47 remaining in the first quarter.

The Lancers responded with a 9-0 run on as newcomer Samm Toli registered five points on a pair of free throws and a three pointer, while senior Natasha Gonzalez and sophomore Brianna Hackett added two points each to take a 14-5 lead before junior Melissa Guglielmello converted a layup to make the score 16-8 after one quarter of play. 

Following a bucket from Guglielmello, Worcester State added to its lead, going on an 8-0 streak on baskets by freshman Kate Surprenant, junior Tanajia Smith and Hackett, en-route to taking a 30-18 advantage into the intermission.

Following intermission, the two team traded baskets on a layup from freshman Hannah Keohan and jumper by junior guard Brit Herring, which ignited a 6-0 Lancer run, led by six points from Herring and a free throw by Gonzalez for the 36-20 margin.

With the score 55-27 entering the fourth quarter, the Green and Gold cut into the deficit (57-31) on a pair of free throws by senior Stephanie Leveillee and a layup from junior Briana Pelton. The hosts answered with a 10-0 streak, keyed by four points from Smith, while Hackett and Toli buried three pointers en-route to the 74-35 final.

For Fitchburg State, Pelton finished with eight points, one assist and one steal, while Guglielmello added seven points, four caroms, one steal and a block. Leveille was also solid, posting six points, and a team-best six boards for the Falcons.

Worcester State was paced by Herring, who posted a double-double of 19 points and ten rebounds to go along with one assist, two steals and three blocks, while Hackett registered 17 points, five caroms, six assists and two steals.

Throughout the contest, Worcester State held a 41-25 advantage in rebounds, including a commanding 19-5 margin on the offensive glass. From the field, the Green and Gold shot 13-for-38 (34.2%), while going 8-of-17 (47.1%) from the line. The Lancers finished the contest shooting 24-for-63 (38.1%) in addition to going 21-for-28 (75.0%) from the charity stripe.

Fitchburg State (0-14, 0-3 MASCAC) returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to MCLA to take on the Trailblazers at 5:30 p.m. Worcester State (5-10, 2-1 MASCAC) will host Bridgewater State University on Wednesday at Fitchburg State University for a contest starting at 6 p.m.
