Rose Earns MASCAC Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year Honors

Rockland, Mass. native named to MASCAC Women's Basketball All-Conference second team

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Freshman guard Kyra Rose was selected the 2016-17 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women's Basketball Rookie of the Year as well as being named to the MASCAC All-Conference second-team as voted on by the league's seven head coaches.

Rose, a freshman guard from Rockland, Mass., ranked second in the conference in points per contest (19.5) and third in rebounds (8.0), while also collecting 91 assists, 31 blocks as well as shooting 47.0% from the field to close out the season for the Green and Gold.

Senior Jill Valley of Westfield State University garnered MASCAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year honors after leading the Owls to their second straight MASCAC regular season and tournament championships. The senior guard from Orange, Mass. led the conference in points per game (22.5), total points (562), free-throw percentage (81.0%) and steals (115). For her efforts, Valley was also named to the MASCAC All-Conference First Team.

Worcester State head coach Karen Tessmer was selected the 2016-17 MASCAC Women's Basketball Coach of the Year after leading the Lancers to an 8-4 mark in conference play, en-route to capturing the third seed in the conference tournament.

Joining Valley on the First Team All-Conference were Framingham State's Raegan Mulherin and Alycia Rackliffe, MCLA's Kayla Hotaling and Worcester State's Brit Herring.

Landing spots on the Second Team All-Conference with Rose were Bridgewater State's Jennie Lindland and Rhiana Page, Salem State's Norma Waggett and Worcester State's Kaitlyn Berkel.

The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, the nation's first Division III men's and women's playing conference, has a rich and storied tradition of competitive success while celebrating excellence in the classroom. MASCAC core member schools include Bridgewater State University, Fitchburg State University, Framingham State University, MCLA, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salem State University, Westfield State University and Worcester State University. Two other institutions, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Plymouth State University, are affiliate members of the conference in the sports of football and men's ice hockey, while Western Connecticut State University joined the conference as an affiliate member in football beginning in 2013.
