Marazzi paces Falcons with team-best 18 points in non-conference setback 

West Hartford, Conn. – The Fitchburg State University women's basketball team suffered a tough 76-74 setback to the Nighthawks of Newbury College in opening round action of the 2017-18 University of Saint Joseph's Tip-Off Tournament this evening at the O'Connell Center.

How It Happened

The Falcons were led by sophomore guard Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H.) with a team-leading 18 points, two rebounds, five assists and five steals, while freshman Mikaela Mitchell (Millbury, Mass.) added 14 points, three caroms, two assists and three steals. Junior Mikala Malboeuf (Fitchburg, Mass.) put forth a solid effort for the Green and Gold as well, finishing with 13 points and six boards in the setback.

For the Nighthawks, freshman forward Jaymesha Sanders (West Hartford, Conn.) registered a double-double of 20 points and 13 boards to go along with one assist and three steals, while junior Taylor Kelley (West Billerica, Mass.) chipped in with 17 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal. Junior Savannah Olsen (Battle Creek, Mich.) was also solid for Newbury, adding 17 points, seven caroms and three assists in the victory.

Inside the Numbers

Fitchburg State shot 28-of-81 (34.6%) overall, including 25.0% (7-for-28) from three point range.

Newbury finished (28-for-67) 41.8% from the field and (38.5%) 5-of-13 from down town.

For the contest, the Nighthawks held a 58-43 margin in rebounds, while the Falcons converted 34 Newbury turnovers into 28 points.

This evening's contest marked just the second ever meeting between the two schools on the basketball court with the Falcons 1-1 all-time when taking on the Nighthawks.

Fitchburg State registered a 63-58 win over Newbury on January 23, 2014 in the first meeting between the Falcons and the Nighthawks.
