Falcons Nipped By Bulldogs, 77-76

Mitchell and McTomney combine for 35 points and 22 rebounds in non-conference setback 

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's basketball team suffered a tough 77-76 setback to the Bulldogs of Dean College in non-conference action at the Parkinson Gymnasium this afternoon.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State raced out to a quick 11-0 lead to open the contest on a pair of buckets from senior Michaela McTomney (Bellingham, Mass.) and sophomore Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H.) as well as a three pointer from sophomore Emma Thomson (York, Maine), before Dean closed out the first quarter on 6-0 run as freshman Shania Springer (Bayshore, N.Y.), senior Morgan Turner (Winter Park, Fla.) and sophomore Shannon Rosensteel (Sunrise, Fla.) to knot the score at 17-17 after one quarter of play.

With the score 27-26, the Bulldogs took a 41-34 margin into the break on a jumper by junior Chanetell Lopez (Meriden, Conn.) and baskets from Turner and freshman Nicole Romero (Winchendon, Mass.).

Following the intermission, The Falcons went on a 9-0 stretch on a trey by Thomson, two baskets from McTonmey and a layup by freshman Mishelle Logie (Attleboro, Mass.) to take a 43-41 advantage. Dean regained the lead on a jumper by Rosensteel (51-49) with four minutes left in the stanza, en-route to a 63-54 advantage going into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Fitchburg State battled back again, cutting the deficit to one (77-76) after a jumper by Marazzi and a free-throw from Thomson, but the comeback fell just short as the Falcons weren't able to convert on their final possession, resulting in the 77-76 final.

Inside the Numbers

Fitchburg State shot 33-for-79 (41.8%) from the field and 28.6% (2-of-7) from three point range.

Dean went 31-of-78 (39.7%) overall, including (5-for-23) 21.7% from beyond the arc.

The Falcons were led by freshman Mikaela Mitchell (Millbury, Mass.) with game-best 22 points and eight rebounds, while McTomney netted a double-double of 13 points and 14 boards.

For the Bulldogs, Springer finished with a team-leading 20 points and seven caroms, while Tuner added 18 points and eight rebounds.

Just the second meeting between two schools on the basketball court with the Falcons 1-1 all-time when taking on the Bulldogs.

Fitchburg State collected a 94-89 double overtime victory over Dean College in the first meeting last season (1/23/2017).
