Falcons Soar Past Amcats, 84-53

Marazzi and Thomson combine for 39 points in non-conference victory

Paxton, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's basketball team defeated the Amcats of Anna Maria College, 84-53 in non-conference action this evening at the Fuller Activities Center.

How It Happened

Anna Maria took an early 6-5 margin after a jumper by senior guard Kristina Russo (South Windsor, Conn.) before Fitchburg State regained the lead on a trey from sophomore Emma Thomson (York, Maine). With the score 16-13, the Falcons went on a 6-2 run to end the first half (22-15) as sophomore Allysa Rivera (Chelsea, Mass.) sparked the run with three ball from the corner.

In the second frame, the two teams traded buckets to start the quarter as sophomore Halley Moore (Worcester, Mass.) sank a jumper for the Amcats, while sophomore Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H.) buried a three pointer for the Falcons before the Green and Gold extended it margin late in the stanza with Marazzi knocking down another three pointer to make score 41-26 going into the intermission.

Following the break, Fitchburg State went on a 7-2 run on a pair of jumpers from newcomer Mikaela Mitchell (Millbury, Mass.) and a three ball by junior Mikala Malboeuf (Fitchburg, Mass.) to extend the lead to 54-33.

In the fourth quarter, the Falcons upped its margin after a 13-0 stretch on the strength of a trio of three pointers from Thomson, while Marazzi and Mitchell added two points each, resulting in the 84-53 final.

Inside the Numbers

Fitchburg State shot 26-of-79 (32.9%) from the field and 42.1% (16-for-38) from three point range.

Anna Maria went 22-of-76 (28.9%) overall, including just (2-for-21) 9.5% from beyond the arc.

The Falcons were led by Marazzi with a team-leading 21 points and three rebounds, while Thomson added 18 points and five boards.

For the Amcats, Russo finished with a team-best 17 points and three boards, while junior Shannon Hofmiller (Oxford, Conn.) chipped in with 15 points and eight caroms.

Fitchburg State controlled the glass, holding a 55-44 advantage on the boards, while also finishing with an 18-10 margin in bench points.

30th meeting between the two schools on the basketball court with the Falcons 20-10 all-time when taking on the AMCATS.

Fitchburg State has won eight of the last ten contests with Anna Maria, including an 80-62 triumph last season at the Parkinson Gymnasium.
