Women's Basketball Downed by Lasell

FITCHBURG, MA: Fitchburg State women's basketball fell this afternoon to the Lasers of Lasell University in non-conference action.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 12/9/23

- Score: Lasell 71, Fitchburg 53

- Records: Lasell (5-4), Fitchburg (3-7)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  This one started slow for both squads as they struggled to get the game's first points. The Falcons scored first with 6:32 left in the first quarter. Lasell would respond and take the lead. The Lasers would add on to the lead, pushing it out to 20 before the break behind Mia Sullivan-Sanders, who topped her team with seven points and six boards.  

- The second half started with the Falcons cutting into the 20-point deficit with a string of baskets getting it to 13 at 46-33. The Lasers wouldn't continue to allow Fitchburg to shrink their lead. They locked down on defense and continued to find open shots, getting it back to 20. The Falcons would put in a layup to end the third at 54-36.

- The fourth would start with the Falcons Olivia Almeida (Wilmington, MA) making back-to-back threes to get them within 12. The Lasers would again keep it from getting any closer with second chance opportunities and the effort by Shirle Major. Major had eight of her 20 points in the fourth quarter, giving them a 22-point lead at 69-47. The Falcons wouldn't be able to get back within striking distance, giving the visiting team a 71-53 victory.

- Major topped all scorers today with 20 points. Kiara Cerruti was the only other Laser to reach double digits with ten points. Laura Johnson found success in this one on the boards as she pulled down a game-high 13.

- The Falcons were led by the Hart sisters. Both Stephanie Hart (Shirley, MA) and Kathryn Hart (Shirley, MA) finished with 11 points. Stephanie completed a double-double with an additional ten rebounds.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  Lasell would shoot 39.2% from the floor, 20% from behind the 3-point line, and 66.7% from the free throw line.

-  Fitchburg finished the game shooting 26.8% from the floor, 8.7% from three, and 46.7% from the free throw line.  

-  Lasell outrebounded the Falcons 60 to 50.
