Burns ends 2009 campaing on high note with a team-high six points

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (April 26, 2009) - The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team dropped its season finale contest, falling to Bridgewater State College, 22-11 this afternoon in New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance action.


 
Freshman Amanda Burns notched a
team-high six points this afternoon.

Freshman Amanda Burns (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) ended her 2009 campaign in a strong fashion, posting a team-high six goals with three points and three assists. Sophomore Kaitlyn Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) was also solid, tallying four points on two scores and three helpers, while junior Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) added two markers and one dish.

Junior Katie DeMaio (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) led all scorers, posting a game-high nine points on six goals and three assists, while junior Shannon Manning (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) notched seven points with three scores and four dishes. Freshman Kristen White (Pelham, Mass./Amherst Regional) also added seven points, totaling four goals and three assists.

Bridgewater State used a 14 goals first half to grab an eight goal lead at the break and cruise to its 12th victory of the season. The Bears used a pair of 7-3 runs throughout the first half to take their commanding lead as White and DeMaio registered three goals apiece. Leahy led the Falcons first half scoring with two goals in the frame.

In the second half, Bridgewater State came out on a tear, posting an 8-3 run in the first 20 minutes of the period. DeMaio led the Bears with three more goals in the period, while Burns tallied two for the Falcons. Fitchburg State tried to muster a comeback late in the contest with three goals in the final nine minutes but junior Meghan Griffin (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial) made three second half saves to preserve the victory.

Bridgewater State out-shot Fitchburg State 30-24 in the contest with 26 shots on net. Senior Jen Astrella (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) suffered the loss for the Falcons, stopping two shots between the pipes, while freshman Jill Shaner (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) posted two saves in her second half effort for Fitchburg State.          

Fitchburg State concludes the regular season with a 6-9 record overall and a 3-4 mark in the NEWLA. Bridgewater State finishes the 2009 season with a 12-4 record overall and a 7-0 mark in the NEWLA.
