Astrella matches a season-high with 14 saves in net

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (April 23, 2009) - The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team was edged by Framingham State College, 13-12 in non-conference action this afternoon.


 
Freshman Amanda Burns totaled
six goals to lead the Falcons offense

Freshman Amanda  Burns (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) led all Falcon scorers with a team-high six goals, while adding eight draw controls and four groundballs. Junior Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) added four points on two goals and two assists, while classmate Tori D'Amato (Hampden, Mass./Merrimack) chipped in with two scores and one helper.

Framingham State sophomore Stephanie Corrales (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) led all scorers with a game-high seven points on five goals and two assists, while freshman Kerry Kiley (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) tallied three markers. Junior Ashley Noonan (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) aided the Rams attack with two goals and one assist.

Framingham State used a 6-0 run midway through the first half to jump out to an 11-7 lead at the break. Corrales paced the Rams first half scoring with all five of her goals, while Kiley added a pair. Burns led the Fitchburg State first half scoring with three goals, while Swan collected one score and two dishes.

In the second half, Fitchburg State came soaring back led by the charge of Burns. The Falcons quickly cut into the Rams lead as Burns connected just 30 seconds into the frame. Swan and D'Amato followed suit with back-to-back goals at the midway through the period, while Burns made it a one goal game with her fifth score of the contest. Both teams traded goals at the 55 minute mark, but Framingham State held the Falcons silent over the final five minutes to secure the victory.

Framingham State held a slim lead in shots, 27-25, while posting a 28-25 advantage in groundballs. Senior Jen Astrella (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) was solid in net for the Falcons, matching a season-high with 14 saves. Junior Allesha Kenyon (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) stopped nine shots for the Rams.        

Fitchburg State (5-8, 2-3 NEWLA) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to Thomas College at 11 a.m. Framingham State (6-7) will host Anna Maria on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
