Swan notches 100th career goal in decisive NEWLA victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 29, 2010) – The Fitchburg State women’s lacrosse team inched its way closer to a 2010 NEWLA playoff berth as the Falcons registered a key 12-9 conference victory over Framingham State College this evening.

Senior Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) propelled the Fitchburg State, becoming the second Falcon in program history to achieve the 100 career goal mark. Swan led all scorers with seven points on three goals and four assists, while sophomore Amanda Burns (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) added a hat-trick and one helper. Freshman Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) was also strong with four points in the contest (2G, 2A), while sophomore Jill Shaner (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) tallied two markers and one dish.

On the visitors side, sophomore Kerry Kiley (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) was strong for the Rams, posting a team-best four points with three goals and one assist, while senior Ashley Noonan (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) added two tallies. Freshman Chelsea Temple (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) chipped in on the offensive end with a pair of goals, while Stephanie Corrales (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) and Brittany McLean (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) notched one score apiece.

Fitchburg State raced out to an early 3-0 lead just seven minutes into the contest, led by the hot-shooting of Shaner, Burns and sophomore Kelly Finamore (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth), but Framingham State rallied right back, knotting the score at 3-3 less than 13 minutes later. Kiley led the Ram charge with an unassisted marker at the 19:53 mark, while Temple and McLean added back-to-back scores over a ten minute span.

The Falcons responded immediately with another series of scores as Swan touched the back of the net twice, but the Rams kept Fitchburg State insight as Kiley answered again with 7:19 remaining the half. Burns and Kelly maintained the Falcons three goal advantage with consecutive scores at the 1:50 mark, but Framingham State finished strong, notching a pair of goals in the final 21 seconds to close the gap to 7-6.

In the second half, Fitchburg State began to pull away, grabbing a solid 11-7 lead just nine minutes into the period. Kelley and Swan opened the second half scoring within seconds of each other, touching for a pair of goals over a six second span, while Shaner added a shorthanded marker at the 23:26 mark. The Rams made it a three goal contest on Temple’s second goal of the game, but the Falcons secured their third league victory with Burns goal with 6:21 remaining.

Fitchburg State goalkeeper, freshman Abbie Brown (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) was strong between the pipes, tallying seven saves to improve to 4-5 on the season, while rookie Chelsea Turner (Billerica, Mass./Shawsheen Tech) finished with 13 saves in hard fought effort for the Rams.

Fitchburg State (9-6, 3-3 NEWLA) will be back in action on Saturday as it closes out the regular season hosting Becker College at 1 p.m.  Framingham State (6-7, 2-4 NEWLA) will visit Bridgewater State College on Saturday at 12 p.m.
