Falcon Pair Named To IWLCA Academic Honor Roll

Swan and Davenport honored for work in the classroom

FITCHBURG, Mass. (August 25, 2010) – Recent graduates Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and Julie Davenport (North Brookfield, Mass./North Brookfield) of the Fitchburg State women’s lacrosse team were recently named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) 2010 Academic Honor Roll as announced by the Association Tuesday afternoon.

The IWLCA has recognized 369 student-athletes at 156 institutions for their excellence in the classroom during the 2009-10 academic year. All student-athletes were nominated by their institutions and have attained at least junior standing academically. Nominees considered had a GPA of at least 3.5 or were in the top 10 percent of their squad.

 Swan, a two-time NEWLA All-Conference second team honoree, collects her second career IWLCA honor after completing her degree in Middle School English Education. She finished her career strong for the Falcons, becoming the first Fitchburg State player to post 200 career points, with a 49 goal, 32 assist senior season.

Davenport, a three-year member of the Fitchburg State women’s lacrosse team, earns her second consecutive IWLCA Academic honor after completing her degree in Architectural Technology. Throughout her career, Davenport appeared in 44 contests, serving a primary role on the Falcons defensive line. With two career points on one goal and one assist, Davenport entered the record books this season, ranking fifth all-time with 65 groundballs and 16 caused turnovers.

The Fitchburg State women’s lacrosse team concluded a strong 2010 season with an overall record of 10-7 and a 4-3 mark in the New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA). The Falcons posted the program’s first-ever playoff appearance with a semifinal berth in the NEWLA Tournament and added five All-Conference selections to the mix.
