Ferrum Shoots Past Fitchburg State, 11-4

Bartlett paves way for Falcons with two scores in non-conference contest

FERRUM, Va. (March 15, 2012) – The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team battled Ferrum College this afternoon, falling to the Panthers, 11-4 in non-conference action at Penn-Roediger Field.

Fitchburg State opened the contest with an early 3-1 lead just over 20 minutes into the first period, but five unanswered scores for Ferrum gave the Panthers a 6-3 advantage at the break. Junior Jessica Bartlett (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) registered two first half goals for Falcons, while senior Amanda Burns (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) added one tally in the period.

In the second half, Ferrum continued its scoring momentum, opening the second half with back-to-back markers, but a goal from junior Cassandra Benoit (North Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) brought Fitchburg State back within four at 8-4. Ferrum closed the contest strong however, eliminating any Falcon comeback with three consecutive scores from Courtney Hamm and Sydney Hewartson.

Hamm led all scorers, totaling five goals in the contest while Brooke Hewartson added four scores for the Panthers. In net, sophomore Dylana Drolette (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) finished eight saves as Fitchburg State was out-shot 24-17 throughout the contest. The Falcons fell victim to a 14-3 margin in draw controls and were barely edge in groundballs 21-20.

Fitchburg State (0-2, 0-0 NEWLA) will visit Elms College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
