Falcons earn fourth-seed in NEWLA playoffs; visit Bridgewater State on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. (April 27, 2012) – The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team collected a convincing 19-5 victory over Mass-Maritime Academy this evening in New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) action.
With the victory, Fitchburg State (7-9, 5-3 NEWLA) earns the fourth seed in the 2012 NEWLA playoffs and will visit top-seeded Bridgewater State University on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Mass-Maritime Academy at 7 p.m. Mass-Maritime concludes its 2012 campaign with an overall record of 2-13 and a 1-7 mark in the NEWLA.
Fitchburg State quickly jumped out to an early lead, using back-to-back goals from senior Kelly Finamore (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) and freshman Lindsey White (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) for a 2-0 advantage. Mass-Maritime added a goal from Hillary Doucette (Manchester, Mass./Manchester-Essex) to cut the Falcon lead to one (2-1), but the Green and Gold rifled off four consecutive goals, three from Jessica Bartlett (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) and one from Cassandra Benoit (N. Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth), for a commanding 6-1 lead with 3:33 remaining in the half.
The Falcons took a 7-2 advantage into the locker room at the break and exploded for 12 second half goals to post their fifth league victory of the year. Benoit led the Falcons second half charge with four scores in the period, while White added a trio of markers.
Fitchburg State dominated all contest, totaling a 40-28 margin in shots and a 15-11 advantage on the draw. The Falcons also possessed the ball, collecting 33 groundballs in the match, while also causing 27 Buccaneer turnovers.
Bartlett and Finamore led all scorers with seven points apiece, while White and Benoit combined for nine goals on the night. In net, sophomore Dylana Drolette (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) earned the victory, totaling 15 saves in her complete game effort, while Tenley Gillett (Manchester, N.H./Gulvey Academy) stopped 14 shots for the Bucs.
