Fitchburg State Shuts Down Daniel Webster, 16-2

Bartlett and Roberts collect five goals apiece in Falcons non-conference victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 4, 2013) – The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team was in action this afternoon as they defeated Daniel Webster College, 16-2 in non-conference action at Elliot Field.

Fitchburg State received an outstanding performance from senior captain Jessica Bartlett (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) who registered a team-best seven points on five scores and two helpers, while junior Chelsea Roberts (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) aided the offense, totaling six points with five goals and one assist.

Freshman defender Leslie Jaffie (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) was also solid for the hosts, tallying three points on one marker and two dishes, while senior Kaylea Parkin (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) and sophomore Alexis Pavelock  (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Greenwich) collected one goal apiece for the Eagles.

The Falcons opened the contest on a 6-0 run in the first 18 minutes of action as senior Sammi Gorman (Malta, N.Y./Ballston Spa) opened the scoring at the 28:14 mark before freshman Samantha Bontempo (Shirley, Mass./Nashoba Tech) collected her first collegiate score seven minutes later, while Roberts added three goals during the run

Daniel Webster broke its scoring silence with ten minutes remaining in the half as Pavelock notched her first goal on the season, but the Green and Gold closed the period on back-to-back markers from freshman Brianna Dunn (Monson, Mass./Monson) and Roberts to take a commanding 10-2 lead into the break.

In the second frame, Fitchburg State continued its offensive surge, as Bartlett posted three consecutive goals in the first three and half minutes of play before capping the scoring on tallies from freshman Stephanie Maki (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Regional), Jaffie and Roberts en-route to the 16-2 victory.

Fitchburg State held a commanding 33-15 advantage in shots, while also finishing with a 15-5 margin in draw controls, while the Eagles totaled 13 ground balls including a team-leading four from Parkin. Between the pipes, freshman Elizabeth Darrigo (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) and junior Dylana Drolette (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) combined to stop11 shots for the Falcons, while freshman Lauren Carrick (Pelham, N.H./Pelham) registered 16 saves for Daniel Webster in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (2-4, 0-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it visits the Owls of Westfield State University at 5 p.m. Daniel Webster (0-1, 0-0 NECC) will travel to Wheelock College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
