Fitchburg State Takes Down Framingham State, 15-9

Apple nets five in Falcons first MASCAC victory of the year

FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 13, 2013) – The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team collected its first MASCAC victory of the season as it downed the Rams of Framingham State, 15-9 this afternoon at Elliot Field.

With the victory, Fitchburg State improves to 3-7 on the season (1-2 MASCAC), while the Rams fall to 1-8 and 1-2 in the league.

Fitchburg State received five goals from junior Markie Apple (Pittsfield, Mass.) and two scores apiece from Jessica Bartlett (Marlborough), Kayla Bridges (Foxboro, Mass.), Kristin Dooley (Salem, Mass.), Chelsea Roberts (Newburyport, Mass.) and Leslie Jaffie (Hicksville, N.Y.)

Junior Lauren Kent (Framingham, Mass.) led the Rams with a team-high four goals, while senior Heather Masse (Billerica, Mass.) added three.  Junior Kalie Giatrelis (Mashpee, Mass.) was the only other Ram to find the back of the net as she scored twice.

The score remained tight throughout much of the first half with Fitchburg State holding just a two goal lead at the break, but a 6-0 run by the Falcons to open the second half propelled Fitchburg State to its first conference victory.

For the game, the Falcons outshot the Rams 29-17, while holding a slim 25-23 edge in ground balls. In net, freshman Elizabeth Darrigo (Billerica, Mass.) picked up the victory for the Falcons, totaling eight saves in the complete game effort, while freshman Alysha Cericola (Waltham, Mass.) made 14 saves for the Rams in a losing effort.

Fitchburg State (3-7, 1-2 MASCAC) will be back in action on Monday as it hosts Mount Ida  at 6 p.m.
