Fitchburg State Rebounds Over Mass-Maritime, 9-5

Apple leads Falcons to fourth victory of the year with four markers

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. (April 16, 2013) – The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team collected its second conference victory of the season after defeating Mass-Maritime Academy, 9-5 on the road this evening.

Junior Markie Apple (Pittsfield, Mass.) led all scorers, totaling a game-high four points with four scores, while senior Jessica Bartlett (Marlborough, Mass.) added a pair of goals. Shavonne Boyle (Doylestown, Pa.) and Molly Smith (Westwood, Mass.) netted two tallies apiece for the Buccaneers.

Clinging to a 3-2 halftime lead, Fitchburg State erupted for six scores in the second, including four unanswered, to clinch its fourth victory of the season. Senior Kristin Dooley (Salem, Mass.) led the Falcons second half charge with back-to-back markers, while Apple added two goals, including a clincher with just 1:58 remaining in the contest.

In net, freshman Elizabeth Darrigo (Billerica, Mass.) registered 14 saves to lead the Falcons, while Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.) totaled 15 stops for the hosts. For the game, Fitchburg State out shot Mass-Maritime 32-27, while boasting a 22-17 margin in groundballs. Draw controls went in favor of the Falcons, 10-6, while turnovers were also in Fitchburg State's favor with a margin of 20-15.

Fitchburg State (4-8, 2-2 MASCAC) will be back in action on Friday as it visits Salem State University at 6 p.m.
