Fitchburg State Falls to Wheaton, 19-1

Drolette registers 11 stops in Falcons non-conference setback

NORTON, Mass. (April 21, 2013) –The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team was in action this afternoon, dropping a 19-1 decision to Wheaton College in non-conference action at Keefe Field in Norton.

Wheaton junior Leila Mills (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) led all players with five points on three goals and two assists, while senior Amy Moreira (Bristol, R.I./Mount Hope) netted a game-high four goals to go along with three draw controls and one ground ball. Junior Charlotte De Sanits (Darien, Conn./Cushing Academy) was also solid for the Lyons, adding three markers, two draw controls, one ground ball and one caused turnovers,

Freshman Julia Gimenez (Framingham, Mass./Medway) posted the Falcons lone marker on the evening at the 11:11 mark of the first half, using a nice feed from sophomore Lindsey White (Hanover,Mass./Hanover), while senior Sammi Gorman (Malta, N.Y./Ballston Spa) added a pair of ground balls for Fitchburg State.

Wheaton jumped out to a 7-0 lead over the opening 16:43 of play and never looked back. De Santis found the back of the net with 26:24 on the scoreboard on a feed from freshman Allie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) for a 1-0 advantage. Mills scored 40-seconds later to make it a 2-0 contest and Sabol buried a free position shot at 24:07 for a 3-0 gap. Bush set up Mills for a tally at 21:41, De Santis netted a free position shot with 21:08 remaining in the first stanza, Moreira registered an unassisted tally at 14:32 and freshman Jenna Tewksbury (Concord, N.H./Concord) capped the run at the 13:17 mark as she diced through a set of defenders for her first of two goals.

After Gimenez broke up the shutout for Fitchburg State at 11:11 in the first half, the Lyons rattled off four-straight goals to close out the stanza before registering eight second-half scores, resulting in the 19-1 victory.

In net senior goalkeeper Stephanie Hoomis (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) turned aside three shots in 30 minutes of action to pick up the win for Wheaton. While junior Dylana Drolette (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) collected 11 saves for the Falcons in the complete game effort The Lyons controlled play, holding a 39-6 margin in shots, while also collecting 22 groundballs throughout the contest.

Fitchburg State (5-9, 3-2 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday as it hosts the Panther of Plymouth State University at 7 p.m. Wheaton College (11-6, 6-0 NEWMAC) will hosts a semifinal round matchup in the upcoming NEWMAC tournament on Saturday at 12 p.m.
