Fitchburg State Cruises Past Mass-Maritime, 15-8

White and Laferriere spark Falcons MASCAC win with eight combined goals

FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 16, 2014) – The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team registered 12 first half goals to cruise to a 15-8 victory over Mass-Maritime Academy at Elliot Field this evening.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 5-7 on the year and 2-2 in the conference, while the Buccaneers fall to 3-6 overall and 0-3 in the MASCAC.

Junior Lindsay White (Hanover, Mass.) and freshman Ali Laferriere (Tyngsboro, Mass.) led the Fitchburg State scoring, combining for eight goals on the evening, with five markers coming from White and three from Laferriere. Freshman Andrea Comeau (Watertown, Mass.) was also solid with a hat-trick, while senior Markie Apple (Pittsfield, Mass.) and freshman Kayla Panek (Belchertown, Mass.) added a pair of markers.

For the Buccaneers, Hillary Doucette (Manchester, Mass.) led the offensive attack, totaling four goals on the night. Dahlia Seggelin (Sharon, Mass.) was also strong with a pair of tallies, while Jannine Prokscha (Washington, Conn.) and Kianna Carpenter (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) each notched a goal.

Fitchburg State took control of game right from the start, scoring the first 11 goals of the contest. White connected on a four scores in the Falcons flurry, while Comeau, Laferriere and Pankey added two goals apiece. Doucette ended the Fitchburg State rally with a score for Mass-Maritime at the 8:17 mark, but Apple found the back of the net for the Falcons with 2:48 remaining to take 12-1 lead into the break.

In the second half, Mass-Maritime chipped away, netting seven goals throughout the frame, including four scores over the final seven minutes. Doucette sparked the Bucs charge with three goals in the stanza, but the deficit was too large as time expired for the Falcons 15-7 victory.

For the game, the Falcons out-shot the Buccaneers, 32-27, while posting a 19-6 advantage in draw controls. Mass-Maritime controlled the ground attack with a  34-26 advantage in groundballs. In net, junior Elizabeth Darrigo (Billerica, Mass.) notched 14 saves in her complete game effort for the Falcons, while Melissa Harris (Scituate, Mass.) stopped eight shots for the Bucs.

Fitchburg State will be back in action on Saturday as it visits Salem State University at 4 p.m.
