Fitchburg State Rolls Past Salem State, 18-10

Laferriere leads Falcons MASCAC victory with seven points

SALEM, Mass. (April 19, 2014) – Freshman Ali Laferriere (Tyngsboro, MA) tallied seven points to lead the Falcons of Fitchburg State over the Vikings of Salem State 18-10 in women's lacrosse action at Alumni Field.

With the victory, the Falcons move to 3-2 (6-7 overall) in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference while the Vikings fall to 2-2 in the MASCAC and 4-8.

After an early Erin Riley (Wakefield, MA) goal that gave Salem State and 1-0 lead, the Falcons went on a 6-0 run that took the game down to the 22-minute mark, and gave Fitchburg a commanding 6-1 lead. During the run, Lindsey White (Hanover, MA) and Markie Apple (Pittsfield, MA) both scored twice and Andrea Comeau (Watertown, MA) and Erin Murphy (Warwick, RI) each netted one.

Kristina Ventura (Billerica, MA) answered for the Vikings with a goal that cut the deficit to four with 20 minutes left to play in the first. After goals from Apple and White that gave Fitchburg State an 8-2 lead, Salem State was able to score three unanswered to shorten the Falcons' lead to just 9-5 with six minutes remaining in the half.

Apple and Laferriere each would score before the end of the half, but Kelsey Russell (Arlington, MA) also added a goal before the horn sounded in the first to cut the Fitchburg lead to 10-6

Kristen Caso (Framingham, MA) scored the first goal of the second half that brought the deficit to just three; the closest Salem State would come all afternoon. After Caso's goal the Falcons outscored the Vikings 8-3 to end the game. During that stretch, Laferriere scored four unanswered goals in a row and five total. Also White and Murphy added one goal apiece.

Salem State was able to come within eight after Kristina Conlonnetted two goals in the last five minutes that brought the difference to single digits at 18-10.

White finished the contest with six points on five goals and one assist as teammate Apple ended with five points on four goals and one assist.

Conlon, Russell, and Riley all had three points apiece for Salem State.

Elizabeth Darrigo (Billerica, MA) picked up the win in net as she stopped 14 Vikings' shots. Chyenne Jackson (Peabody, MA) also made 14 saves, but allowed 18 goals in the defeat.

Fitchburg State will be back in action on Monday as it hosts Wentworth at 6 p.m.
