Owls Snap Falcons Win Streak, 16-11

FITCHBURG, Mass. - Fitchburg State University (7-2, 1-1 MASCAC) women's lacrosse fell short in securing their eighth consecutive win of the season as they were defeated by Westfield State University (5-4, 1-1 MASCAC), 16-11, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) contest on Saturday night at Elliot Field.

Both teams exchanged goals twice in the early minutes, including a pair from Samantha Lungarini for the Owls. The Falcons would take their only lead of the game at the 16:04 mark by Andrea Comeau, but Westfield State responded with a 4-0 run that included a pair by Lungarini as the visitors took a 9-7 edge into halftime.

Fitchburg State cut the Owls lead to one on two occasions in the closing half, but three consecutive goals by Brooke Williams midway through the half gave Westfield State a four goal cushion (14-10).

Corinne DeSimone's unassisted tally with 12:46 remaining cut the deficit to three, but a pair of goals from Meg Griffen would put a damper in any comeback attempt for the Green & Gold.

Elizabeth Darrigo finished with a season-high 13 saves despite suffering the loss between the pipes, while her counterpart Mimi Khampaeng made an impressive 15 saves in the winning effort.

Ali Laferriere led the Falcons with four goals and six draw-controls, while Desimone and Carrie Long chipped in with two goals apiece.

Westfield State was led offensively by Griffen with 10 points (six goals & four assists), while Lungarini contributed with five goals and one helper.

Fitchburg State will return to Elliot Field on Tuesday, April 7 as they host Mt. Ida at 4:00pm. The Owls will travel to Eastern Connecticut the same day with a 4:30 start time.
