Fitchburg State Topples Mustangs, 19-9

FITCHBURG, Mass. - Fitchburg State University (8-2) got back into the win column as they defeated Mount Ida College (2-9), 19-9, in a non-conference women's lacrosse matchup on Tuesday evening at Elliot Field.
The Falcons were able to find the back of the net just 19 seconds into the contest as Andrea Comeau dodged through the Mustangs defense for the first goal of the game. Minutes later it would Comeau again, followed by Ali Laferriere to cap a 3-0 run to begin the contest for the hosts.
After an Amanda Bowen goal for Mount Ida to cut the deficit to 3-1, Fitchburg State proceeded on a 4-0 run to increase their advantage by six goals.
The Mustangs received scores later in the opening half from Bowen and Samantha Basler, but it would be the Falcons up 10-3 going into halftime, led in part by Comeau with four goals and one assist in the opening stanza.
Fitchburg State continued the scoring barrage in the second half, going up by as much 13 at the 18:40 mark that concluded a 5-0 run by the Falcons that included a pair of tallies from freshman Jaimee Lutz.
Mount Ida would not go down quietly however, as the away side went on a 4-0 run midway through the period that included three goal by Bowen. The comeback attempt deemed little too late however as Lindsey White scored with 52 seconds left for the final 19-9 score in the Green & Gold's favor.
Comeau finished with a game-high six goals and two assists for eight points, while White contributed with three goals and two helpers to move into third place on the program's all-time goals scored list with 111.
The Mustangs were led by Bowen with five goals and two assists, while Basler chipped in with two goals and one assist.
Elizabeth Darrigo picked up the win for the Falcons in net making seven saves, while Nicole Patterson had five stops in the second half between the pipes. Their counterpart Sydney Fredette made 17 saves in the losing effort for Mount Ida.
Overall, Fitchburg State held a 43-30 advantage in shots, 28-26 edge in ground balls, and won in draw-controls 17-13.
Fitchburg State will be back in action on Thursday, April 9 as they host UMass Dartmouth at 7:00pm. Mount Ida will host Nichols the same day at 3:30pm.
