Falcons Fly Past MCLA, 19-7; Break Single-Season Wins Record

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Fitchburg State University set a program record 13 victories as the Falcons defeated Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 19-7, in Massachusetts State Collegiate Conference (MASCAC) women's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon.

The game was relatively close in the first half as a Rebecca Pike goal with seven minutes to go in the first half cut the Falcon lead to 4-3.

Fitchburg jumped out 2-0 on goals by Andrea Comeau and Ali Laferriere just four minutes into the game. The Trailblazers (4-8, 0-6) would respond as Natalie Caney and Pike scored back to back, the latter coming off a feed from Caney to a cutting Pike.

The Falcons would start to control the play at the end of the half and a Samantha Bontempo goal took the Fitchburg into the break with a 7-4 lead.

Fitchburg State (13-3, 4-2) carried the play throughout the second half scoring the first five goals of the half before Kate Brown's second goal of the game momentarily stopped the bleeding. The Falcons put together another run and put the game out of reach midway through the half.

Brown would add another and Rachel Green would close out the scoring with a goal as the Trailblazers played a woman down. The final score was 19-7 in favor of the Falcons.

Nine different Falcons scored goals as Comeau, Laferriere and Lindsey White each scored three times.

Brown scored three and Pike added two for MCLA. MCLA goalie Alexandra David faced thirty shots and made eleven saves in defeat.

Elizabeth Darrigo had six stops in moving her record to 12-3.

The 13 wins in a season breaks the previous program record of 12 that was set during the 2010-11 season when the Falcons finished with a 12-3 record.

The Falcons will be at home Friday night at 6:00 PM versus Mass. Maritime, as the seniors playing in their last regular season game will be recognized. MCLA will play its final game of the season Saturday night at Salem State beginning at 6:00 PM.
