Laferriere and Luksha net one goal each for Falcons in non-conference setback
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Fitchburg State University women's lacrosse team dropped a tough 14-2 decision to the Brewers of Vassar College in non-conference action this morning at the Dave Martins Field.
Fitchburg State was led by junior Carrie Long with four ground balls, one draw control and three caused turnovers, while senior Ali Laferriere and sophomore Lindsey Luksha combined for two goals and one caused turnover.
For Vassar, freshman Kelly Pushie collected three points on two goals and one helper as well as three ground balls, two draw controls and one caused turnover, while junior Storm Sideleau finished with three goals, two ground balls, three draw controls and one caused turnover.
Vassar took an early 3-0 lead on markers by Pushie, newcomer Tessa Waters and sophomore Fiona MacLeod before the Falcons dented the score board with a tally from Laferriere to make the score 3-1.
The Brewers extended its margin, closing the half with seven unanswered goals as Sideleau and freshman Adele MacEwen found the back of the net twice, while Pushie, Waters and sophomore Emily Hamburger added one score each for the 10-1 margin going into the break.
Following the intermission, the Falcons cut into the deficit on Luksha's first marker of the season off an assist from senior Kayla Panek (12-2), but Vassar secure the victory, adding a pair of insurance goals by Hamburger and Sideleau, resulting in the 14-2 final.
Throughout the game, Vassar finished with a 30-8 advantage in shots, while also holding a 24-15 margin in groundballs. In net, sophomore Marguerite Belcher stopped eight shots for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while junior Emily Chancey and sophomore Kristin Caolo made one save each for the Brewers.
Fitchburg State (2-3, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to Eastern Connecticut State for a contest starting at 7 p.m. Vassar (2-2, 0-0 LL) will host Connecticut College on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
