T. Long leads Falcons over Corsairs in non-conference action at Elliot Field
FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's lacrosse team was in action this evening, collecting a 12-8 decision over the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Elliot Field.
UMass Dartmouth raced out to a quick 3-1 lead on goals from sophomore Catrina Longo, senior Kathryn Gibb and junior Julia DiPillo while the Falcons sandwiched in a tally from freshman Tracy Long, her eighth of the season.
The Falcons turned the tide with three consecutive markers in a three minute span to take a 4-3 advantage. Sophomore Anna Gagnon-Burch started the scoring after receiving a soft pass from Kayla Panek on the right wing for her fifth tally of the season.
Senior Andrea Comeau knotted the game at 3-all and classmate Ali Laferriere pushed the Green and Gold to their first lead of the game with an unassisted drive off the draw control. The teams would trade goals nine seconds apart and the Falcons would carry a 5-4 lead into intermission.
Following the break for the hosts, T. Long would tally her second of the game, while Panek added a pair and Comeau would notch a single score to open up a 9-6 lead midway through the frame.
The Green and Gold tallied the next three scores in the contest, pulling away to a 12-6 lead. The Corsairs would add two late goals from Kasey Hayes and Leah Douty for the 12-8 final.
Fitchburg State was paced by T. Long, who posted a game-best four points on three goals and one assist, while junior Carrie Long added an assist with seven ground balls, five draw controls and six caused turnovers. Comeau added a hat-trick with one ground ball and Gagnon-Burch and Panek collected three points each with two goals and an assist.
For the Corsairs, Gibb totaled two goals as well as three ground balls and one caused turnover, while Doutyadded three points on a goal and two helpers to go along with two ground balls and two caused turnover.
Throughout the match, Fitchburg State held a 28-21 advantage in shots, while also holding a 15-7 margin in draw controls. UMass Dartmouth held a slight advantage (30-29) in ground balls. In between the pipes, sophomore Marguerite Belcher made 13 saves in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while Kaitlyn Burchill turned away 14 shots for UMass Dartmouth in 60 minutes of work.
Fitchburg State (4-5, 0-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it travels to MCLA for a conference contest starting at 12:00 p.m. UMass Dartmouth (5-4, 0-0 LEC) will host Plymouth State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
