Falcons Upended By Corsairs, 20-9

T. Long and C. Long combine for five goals in non-conference setback 

Dartmouth Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's lacrosse team dropped a 20-9 decision to the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth this evening in non-conference action at Cressy Field.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State took a 6-5 advantage with roughly 12 minutes remaining in the first on two scores from senior Carrie Long (Foxboro, Mass.), while sophomores Tracy Long (Georgetown, Mass.), Sarah Napolitano (Peabody, Mass.) and Nicole Kopacz (Tewksbury, Mass.) and newcomer Madison Alves (Braintree, Mass.) added on score each.

UMass Dartmouth responded with five unanswered goals, with senior Leah Douty (Framingham, Mass.) leading the way with a trio of markers, while classmate Erin Kish (Littleton, Mass.) and fellow senior Julie DiPillio (Medway, Mass.) chipped in with one goal each to give the Corsairs a 10-6 margin going into the break.

Following the intermission, the Falcons cut the deficit to 10-7 as T. Long netted her second tally of the contest before the Corsairs upped its lead (13-7) on a score from Kish. Fitchburg State continued to battle when junior Nicole Lee (Quincy, Mass.) found the back of the net minutes later, but UMass Dartmouth secured the win as Douty connected on back-to-back scores, resulting in the 10-9 final.

11th meeting between the two team on the lacrosse field with the Falcons 6-5 all-time when taking on the Corsairs..

Fitchburg State had won the last three contests against UMass Dartmouth, including a 12-8 decision last season. Sophomore Tracy Long paced the Green and Gold, registering four points on three goals and one assist as well as one ground ball.

T. Long led the way for the Green and Gold with a team-best three goals as well as one ground ball and one caused turnover, while C. Long added to the mix with two goals to go along with six ground balls, eight draw controls and three caused turnovers.

For the Corsairs, Dloiuty finished with a game-leading nine points on eight goals and one assist to go along with eight ground balls and six draw controls, while Kish added four scores, three ground balls and three caused turnovers.

In between the pipes, junior Marguerite Belcher (Quincy, Mass.) stopped 11 shots for Fitchburg State in the complete game effort, while counterpart Kaitlyn Burchill (Bridgewater, Mass.) made eight saves in 60 minutes of work for UMass Dartmouth
