Falcons Fall to Corsairs in Non-Conference Lacrosse Action 13-10

Long posts six goals in setback

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's lacrosse team dropped a 13-10 decision to the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth this evening in non-conference action at Elliot Field

How It Happened

Fitchburg State opened the game sprinting out to a 3-0 lead on a natural hat trick from junior Tracy Long (Georgetown, Mass.). The Corsairs answered back with five straight scores. Junior Sam Muir (Sturbridge, Mass.) potted three goals in the streak. Long closed out the first half with her 11^th of the season to cut the deficit to 5-4 at the half.

Following intermission, the Falcons went on a 4-2 run to take the lead 8-7 with 19 minutes to play. Trailing 7-5 the Green and Gold hit a trio of makers with two goals from Long sandwiched around score from freshman Julia Miele (South Hadley, Mass.) to take the lead.

Knotted at 9-9, the Corsairs upped the lead (12-9) with goals from freshman Isabella Mancini (Bellingham, Mass.), Muir and senior Katie Tighe (Easton, Mass.)

Fitchburg State continued to battle when senior Sarah Napolitano (Peabody, Mass.) found the back of the net, but UMass Dartmouth secured the win as Mancini connected, resulting in the 13-10 final.  

Inside the Numbers

• 12th meeting between the two team on the lacrosse field with the Falcons 6-6 all-time when taking on the Corsairs.
• Long led the way for the Green and Gold with a team-best six goals and three ground balls, and one caused turnover, while senior Sarah Mallahan (Dracut, Mass.) added to the mix with two goals, one assist to go along with two ground balls.
• For the Corsairs, Muir finished with a game-leading seven points on six goals and one assist.
• In between the pipes, senior Marguerite Belcher (Quincy, Mass.) stopped 12 shots for Fitchburg State in the complete game effort, while counterpart Kaitlyn Burchill (Bridgewater, Mass.) made fourteen saves in 60 minutes of work for UMass Dartmouth
•  UMass Dartmouth held the advantage in shots (32-27), while Fitchburg State led in ground balls (30-20)
