Women’s Lacrosse Downed in Season Opener

 



North Hampton, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's lacrosse team dropped a 17-6 decision to the Pioneers of Smith College in non-conference action this afternoon at Strong Turf Field.

How It Happened

Smith grabbed a 6-0 advantage after the first period. The Pioneers were led by Gian Arancio (Smithtown, NY) and Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, CA) who each notched a pair of goals.

Trailing 8-0, the Falcons potted a man-up goal from freshman Alexis Raymond (Tewksbury, Mass.).

Smith finished the frame with goals from Sydney Havlick (Murrieta, CA) and Arancio to extend the lead to 10-1 at halftime.

Fitchburg St. opened the third period with scores from first-year Abaigeal Gilman (Clinton, Mass.) and junior Grace Wetherbee (Marblehead, Mass.) to cut the deficit to 11-3. The hosts closed out the frame with five unanswered goals.

Three different Falcons notched goals in the fourth quarter. Both junior Brooke Johnson (Billerica, Mass.) and senior Julia Miele (South Hadley, Mass.) tallied their first goals of the season while Raymond added her second of the game, resulting in the 17-6 final.

  • Smith held the advantage in shots (32-20) and ground balls (24-17)
