Falcons Cruise Past Buccaneers, Score Conference Win

Buzzards Bay, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse notched their first conference win with a 15-10 decision over the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Friday evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Clean Harbors Stadium

How It Happened

The teams traded goals in the first quarter and were tied 2-2 after one quarter. Senior Eva Kozikowski (Portsmouth, NH) scored the first two goals of the night and MMA countered with a pair of man-advantage goals from Cassie Llewellyn.

Llewellyn opened the scoring in the second quarter with a goal and an assist to give the hosts a 4-2 lead. The Green and Gold responded with four unanswered goals getting tallies from Nicole Orlowski (Ellington, Conn.), Jessica St. George (Dracut, Mass.), Abaigeal Gilman (Clinton, Mass.), and Kozikowski.

Holding a slim 6-5 lead, Cali Laakso (Fitchburg, Mass.) notched a man-up goal just before intermission to extend the Falcons' lead.

The Falcons poured in three straight goals to start the third quarter. Laakso added her second of the night, Kozikowski scored her fourth of the game and St. George tipped the twine to force the Buccaneers to call a timeout. The hosts battled back with a pair of goals to close out the third quarter to cut the Falcons' lead to 10-7.

MMA outscored the Falcons 2-1 to open the fourth quarter, making it an 11-9 ballgame. The Falcons battled back with outstanding defense and potted three straight to extend the advantage to 14-9. Laakso had a pair of goals and St. George completed the hat trick.

With one second left, Kozikowski scored her sixth goal of the game, resulting in the 15-10 final.
