Bears Edge Falcons in MASCAC Action

 

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse suffered a 13-12 loss to the Bears of Bridgewater State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Friday evening.

How It Happened

Senior Eva Kozikowski (Portsmouth, NH) notched her 29th goal of the season to open the scoring for the Falcons to make it a 2-1 ballgame.

Bridgewater extended the lead to 4-1 with two goals within a minute from Camryn Gonsalves (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and Katie Swart (Bridgewater, Mass.).  Sophomore Alexis Raymond (Tewksbury, Mass.) added the second goal of the game for Fitchburg State at the 3:09 mark of the first quarter.

The Bears closed out the quarter with three unanswered goals including a pair from Erin McIntyre (Tewksbury, Mass.).

With 3:27 remaining in the second quarter senior Cali Laakso (Fitchburg, Mass.) potted her 17th goal of the season to make the score 7-3.

Fitchburg State opened the third quarter with goals from Delany Ponder (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and Jessica St. George (Dracut, Mass.) to cut the deficit to 8-5. Bridgewater took a 10-6 lead with the 10th of the season from Meredith Sylva (South Dartmouth, Mass.) but the Green and Gold answered with one tick remaining in the stanza with Laakso's second of the night.

The teams traded goals in the fourth quarter until St. George, Nicole Orlowski (Ellington, Conn.), and Laakso tallied three straight goals to edge the score closer (12-11) with 3:39 to play.

Melanie McClay (Plymouth, Mass.) gave the Bears a two-goal advantage (13-11) with 2:08 remaining. Laakso poured in her fourth of the game with 33 seconds left to make it 13-12, however, Bridgewater State won the ensuing draw control and ran the clock out for the win.

  • Netminder Brooke Williams (South Dennis, Mass.) was stellar in net for the Falcons making 15 saves in the setback
  • Olivia Kerrigan (Braintree, Mass.) posted 7 saves for the win
