Dutcher nets two goals in Falcons sixth victory of the season

BOSTON, Mass. (September 22, 2008) - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team collected a 4-1 victory over UMass Boston in non-conference action this afternoon at Clark Athletic Center.

Junior Ashley Dutcher (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) paced the Fitchburg State offense with two scores in the contest, while freshman Brenna Flynn (Sutton, Mass./Sutton Memorial) totaled three points with her first collegiate goal and one assist. Classmate Carissa Kennedy (Somerset, Mass./Bishop Stang) tallied one score in the contest, while sophomore Ali Landry (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) and newcomer Julie Dowson (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) chipped in with an assist.

Freshman Kristin Mulry (Holbrook, Mass./Hingham) led the UMass Boston charge, scoring the lone goal for the Beacons.

Fitchburg State jumped out to an early lead in the first half, registering three unanswered goals to begin the contest. Dutcher put Fitchburg State on the board first early in the 14th minute as she deposited a Dowson header into the back of the net for her fifth score of the season. Kennedy and Flynn followed with back-to-back goals in a 1:57 span to give the Falcons a quick 3-0 advantage.

UMass Boston broke its scoring silence late in the first half as Mulry slipped a shot through the lower left corner of the net to tally her third goal of the season. Fitchburg State responded with a late second half goal by Dutcher to preserve its sixth victory of the season.

Fitchburg State out-shot UMass Boston 26-9 in the contest including 11-2 in the first half. Junior goaltender Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) started the match for the Falcons before giving way to classmate Kyla Batchelder (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) who totaled five saves. Junior Courtney Haroules (Littleton, Mass./Cushing Academy) totaled nine stops for the Beacons.

Fitchburg State (6-3, 0-1 MASCAC) is back in action Saturday as it host Salem State College at 6 p.m. UMass Boston (2-5, 1-0 LEC) will host Southern Maine on Saturday at 1 p.m.
