Batchelder totals four saves in first start of the season

SALEM, Mass. (September 26, 2009) - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team fell for the sixth consecutive game, suffering a 2-0 loss at the hands of Salem State College in MASCAC soccer action this afternoon.

After a limited first half that witness only six total shots, Salem State started attacking, score two goals in the second frame to earn its sixth victory of the season. Junior Erin O'Brien (Hanson, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) put the Vikings on the board first, scoring her fourth goal of the year in the 59th minute.

Salem State continued to pressure the Falcons defense as freshman Jessica Doyle (Salem, Mass./Salem) connected in the 65th minute off junior KatyLyn Verrette's (Saugus, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) assist. The score was Doyle's first score of her collegiate career, giving the Vikings a 2-0 advantage.

Salem State only held a slim a 9-8 advantage in shots, while Fitchburg State registered all eight shots on net. Sophomore Lindsay Burke (Harvard, Mass./Bromfield) stonewalled the Falcons throughout the contest, totaling eight stops for her third shutout of the season. Senior Kyla Batchelder (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) made four saves in net for Fitchburg State.

Fitchburg State (2-7-0, 0-2-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it travels to UMass Dartmouth at 7 p.m. Salem State (6-3-0, 3-0-0 MASCAC) will also be in action on Tuesday as it hosts the University of Southern Maine at 6 p.m.
