Beaton lifts Bears to overtime victory with first goal of the season

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 25, 2010) – The Fitchburg State women's soccer team suffered its second straight MASCAC setback this afternoon, falling to Bridgewater State University, 2-1 at Swenson Field.

JULIE DOWSON

Senior Kylie Beaton (Epson, N.H./Pembroke Academy) lifted the Bears to their third victory of the season in 104th minute of the match, using a pass from junior Amber LaPorte (New Hartford, Conn./Northwestern Regional) for the game-winning marker. LaPorte set up the game-winner with a solid head pass that Beaton drilled home to end the contest.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring late in the first half as junior Julie Dowson (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) connected for her second goal of the season in the 38th minute. Dowson took a pass off a free kick from senior Katie Hayward (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) and headed the ball to the back of the net to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

Bridgewater State answered immediately, scoring the equalizer just two minutes later as junior Jordan McDermott (E. Bridgewater, Mass./E. Bridgewater) tallied her third goal of the season. McDermott sparked the Bears rally, using an assist from classmate Laura Sudbey (Rockland, Mass./Rockland) to knot the game at one apiece heading into the break.

After a scoreless second half, play advanced into a pair of ten minute, overtime periods. Neither team capitalized in the first extra frame with only three shots in the stanza, but Bridgewater State secured its victory just three minutes into the second overtime period as Beaton notched her first game-winning goal of the season.

Fitchburg State held a slim 17-14 edge in shots throughout the contest, while Bridgewater State enjoyed a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Kayla Grover (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) earned the victory for the Bears with four saves between the pipes, while junior Melanie Berent (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) stopped three shots in the loss for the Falcons.

Fitchburg State (3-3-1, 1-1-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Wednesday as it hosts Emmanuel College at 4 p.m. Bridgewater State (3-4-0, 2-0-0 MASCAC) will host MIT on Thursday at 4 p.m.
