Castleton State Edges Fitchburg State, 2-1

Chadburn's goal in 88th minute propels Spartans to 14th victory of the season

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 20, 2010) – Junior Courtney Chadburn (N. Clarendon, Vt./Mill River Union) registered a pair of goals to lead Castleton State College to a close 2-1 victory over Fitchburg State University this evening.

After a silent first half, Castleton State notched the first marker of the game as Chadburn converted a successful penalty kick in the 62nd minute of the match. After being brought down inside the box, Chadburn beat Fitchburg State keeper Melanie Berent (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) with a low rolling kick to the left corner of the net for her team-leading 19th goal of the season.

The Falcons answered immediately with penalty kick of their own as senior Katie Hayward (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) rifled a shot to the back of the net for her second goal of the year just 0:50 later. Hayward beat Spartan goaltender Erick Davis (Cambridge, Vt./Lamoille Union) with a hard blast to the top right corner for the game's equalizer at the 62:49 mark.

With time winding down and overtime insight, Chadburn answered the challenge, capitalizing on a one-on-one situation in the 88th minute. Chadburn dribbled the ball down the left sideline, crossing up a Falcon defender and delivered a strike to the lower right corner of the net from ten yards out for the game-winner.

Fitchburg State battled with 14-2-1 Spartans, as Castleton State held only slim one shot margins in both targets (16-15) and corner kicks (6-5). Berent was strong in net for Fitchburg State, totaling a game-best eight saves, while Davis tallied five stops in the complete game victory for the visitors.

Fitchburg State (8-6-1, 2-3-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it hosts Framingham State at 10 a.m. Castleton State (14-2-1, 6-0-1 NAC) awaits its berth into the North Atlantic Conference this week.
