Fitchburg State Runs Past Framingham State, 3-0

Berent earns second shutout of the season with seven stops in key MASCAC win

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 23, 2010) – Junior Melanie Berent (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) earned her second shutout of the season as the Fitchburg State women's soccer team blanked Framingham State University, 3-0 in MASCAC action this afternoon.

Fitchburg State grabbed the early lead, posting a pair of goals midway through the first frame for a 2-0 lead at the break. Freshman Rachel Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) gave the Falcons a 1-0 edge in the 27th minute as she connected for her team-leading ninth goal of the season with header off senior Katie Hayward (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) corner kick. Senior Ali Landry (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) quickly padded the Fitchburg State lead just 1:05 later, using a touch pass from classmate Julie Almstrom (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) for second goal of the year.

The Falcons added to their lead midway through the second period as senior Heather Sharp (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake) struck for her first score of the year. Sharp took a feed from Hayward off a Fitchburg State free kick and beat senior goalkeeper Jill Johnson (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) to the right for a commanding, 3-0 lead.

Fitchburg State controlled the tempo of the contest, limiting Framingham State only 17 shots in the match, including a minimal three in the first period. The Falcons peppered the Rams defensive end with 26 targets throughout the game, while boasting four corner kicks. Berent notched earned her third victory of the season with seven stops in her complete game effort, while Johnson stopped nine shots for the Rams.

Fitchburg State (9-6-1, 3-3-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Tuesday as it travels to Smith College at 4 p.m. Framingham State (7-8-0, 3-3-0 MASCAC) will host UMass Boston on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
