MCLA Rebounds Over Fitchburg State, 1-0

Berent posts three saves in Falcons third MASCAC setback

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. (October 16, 2010) – The Fitchburg State women's soccer team suffered a tough league loss this afternoon as MLA topped Fitchburg State, 1-0 in a pivotal MASCAC matchup.

REBECCA SPIRO

MCLA remains atop the MASCAC standings, using rainy, windy and raw conditions to its advantage. With only 17 combined shots in the contest, the Trailblazers used a goal by senior Jess Tietgens (Stamford, Vt./Drury) in the 16th minute of the match to earn their ninth victory of the season.

The Trailblazers notched the game's lone goal with a bit of luck as Lindsay Borbolla (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich Central) launched a shot from 45 yards and used the swirling winds to carry the ball towards the goal. Falcon goaltender Melanie Berent (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) made the initial save on Borbolla's long attempt, but the rebound fell to the foot of Tietgens for her 12th marker of the season.

The Falcons offense threatened late, bringing Wehner off her mark with 15 seconds remaining in the first frame. The veteran goalie came out to challenge a Fitchburg State shot but her save ricocheted to freshman Rebecca Spiro (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield). Spiro found herself with an open opportunity but her blast from ten yards out was speared by Lauren Ford (Voorheesville, N.Y./Berne-Know) who denied the equalizer.

In the second half, neither team could muster any offense with play coming to a standstill at 1-0. Fitchburg State used a balanced attack with four shots in each period, while MCLA notched nine for the contest, including eight attempts in the first half. Wehner ended the contest with one stop for the Trailblazers, while Berent finished with three stops for the Falcons.

Fitchburg State (8-5-1, 2-3-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to MCLA at 1 p.m. MCLA (9-2-2, 4-0-1 MASCAC) will visit RPI on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
