Smith Silences Fitchburg State, 1-0
Berent goes the distance in Falcons non-conference heartbreaker
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (October 26, 2010) – Junior Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, Fla./Southwest) kept Fitchburg State at bay for 90 minutes and classmate Jen Chang (Seoul, South Korea) scored her first collegiate goal as Smith College defeated Fitchburg State University 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Falcons (9-7-1) outshot the Pioneers (4-10-1) 25-2, but could not find a way past Gregor, who tied a career high with 13 saves while notching her second shutout of the season.
Fitchburg State threatened to score in the seventh minute when freshman Nicole Stone (Webster, Mass./Bartlett) headed a shot over the goal and classmate Rachel Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) forced a shot on net, but Gregor came up strong posting six first half saves to keep the game at a 0-0 deadlock.
In the second half, Smith broke the 83 minutes of scoring silence as Chang connected for the eventual game-winner. Chang gave the Pioneers their fourth victory of the season in the 84th minute as the junior took possession of the ball from 30 yards out, and drove a shot with plenty of bend pass the dive of Falcon goaltender Melanie Berent (W. Hartford, Conn./Conard).
Fitchburg State continued to press, earning a pair of corners in the final minutes, but were limited to a pair of shots from distance that sailed wide. The Falcons also commanded the corner attempts with a 10-2 margin, while posting 16 shots throughout the second frame. Gregor paced Smith in the victory with a complete game effort, while Berent went the distance for the Falcons.
Fitchburg State (9-7-1, 3-3-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to Worcester State at 10 a.m. Smith (4-10-1, 1-6-1 NEWMAC) will host WPI on Saturday at 1 p.m.
