Fitchburg State Tops Wellesley, 1-0

Jamieson's PK and eighth marker of the season proves to be game-winner

WELLESLEY, Mass. (October 12, 2010) – Freshman Rachel Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) notched her team-leading eighth goal of the season to lead Fitchburg State to a 1-0 non-conference victory of Wellesley College this evening.

Jamieson hit home for her team-best marker in the 32nd minute of the contest as the freshman striker converted a successful penalty kick attempt after being taken down in the box. Jamieson beat Wellesley keeper Sarah Gray for the game's only score and eventual game-winner.

Throughout the first half, Wellesley held a slight 8-6 advantage in shots, but junior keeper Melanie Berent (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) recorded seven first-half saves to keep The Blue off the board.

In the second half, Wellesley had its best chance to match to net the equalizer after a scrum in front of the goal brought Berent off her mark, but Chelsea-Ann Patry's attempt went wide left, leaving the game a 1-0 standstill. The Blue threatened late in the contest, outshoot the Falcons 11-3 in the period, but Berent stonewalled the Wellesley attack with five saves throughout the period.

Wellesley finished the contest with a commanding 19-9 advantage in shots, but the Fitchburg State defense stood strong paced by the 12 stops from Berent. With the victory, Berent post her first shutout of the season, while improving to 2-3-0 on the season. Gray ended the match with four stops for The Blue.

Fitchburg State (8-4-1, 2-2-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to MCLA at 1 p.m. Wellesley (6-6-1, 3-3-1NEWMAC) will visit Smith College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
