Falcons conclude 2010 season with MASCAC setback vs. Lancers

WORCESTER, Mass. (October 30, 2010) – The Fitchburg State women's soccer team suffered a season-ending MASCAC setback this afternoon, falling to Worcester State University, 3-0 at Coughlin Field.

With the victory Worcester State (8-5-4, 4-1-2 MASCAC) earns a bid into the 2010 MASCAC playoffs while Fitchburg State concludes its season with an overall record of 9-8-1 and a 3-4-0 mark in the MASCAC.

Worcester State connected for the only goal it would need early in the first half as freshman Brittney Rotatori (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) tallied her second goal of the season off a feed from junior Danielle Clifford (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro). Rotatori gave the Lancers the early edge in the eighth minute of the match, slipping the ball past Falcon keeper Melanie Berent (W. Hartford, Conn./Conard) for 1-0 lead heading into intermission.

In the second half, the Lancers broke loose, touching for two scores throughout the stanza. Worcester State's first marker of the period came early as sophomore Kathleen Smith (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) hit home on an unassisted marker just 1:52 into the frame for her second goal of the year. Clifford then capped the Lancers offense late in the period, securing Worcester State's playoff hopes in the 88th minute with her third goal of the season.

Worcester State played aggressively, holding a 15-7 advantage in shots, including a 10-4 margin in the first half. Senior Rachel Armenti (W. Boylston, Mass./Holy Name) earned the victory for the Lancers with one save through one half of work, while classmate Angieszaka Sychtysz (Warren, Mass./Quabog) stopped two shots in her second half effort. Berent totaled six stops for the Falcons.
