Fitchburg State Runs Past Anna Maria, 7-0

Santos paces Falcons scoring explosion with five points in the contest

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 6, 2011) – The Fitchburg State women's soccer team exploded for four first half goals en route to a 7-0 non-conference victory over Anna Maria College this evening.

Freshman Sierra Santos (Lakeville, Mass./Dartmouth) did most of the damage for Fitchburg State, tuning in on each of the Falcons first three goals. The rookie forward ignited the scoring with her first goal of the year, using a dish from senior Katie Hayward (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) just four minutes into the contest. On the Falcons second score, Santos struck again, this time on the back end as senior Carissa Kennedy (Somerset, Mass./Bishop Stang) deposited her pass for her team-leading third goal of the season.

Fitchburg State capped its three goal flurry by the 14 minute mark as Santos collected her second goal of the game. Santos sent a shot in from the left channel that deflected off the keeper and trickled to the back of the net. Sophomore Rachel Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) chipped in another score at the 20 minute mark, giving the Falcons a 4-0 advantage at the break.

In the second half, Fitchburg State added another trio of markers as Hayward, Jamieson and freshman Nicole Green (Boylston, Mass./Tahanto Regional) converted consecutive scores by the 66th minute. Hayward cashed in on a Hannah Mitchell (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) assist early in the half, while Jamieson chipped in her second goal of the game off a Kennedy feed. Foley then sealed the Fitchburg State scoring with her first collegiate goal at 65:51.

Sophomore Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) earned the victory in net for the Falcons as she was untested for the first 22 minutes of the game. Freshman Kelsey Ford (Franconia, N.H./Profile School) and senior Melanie Berent (W. Hartford, Conn./Conard) took over the goaltending duties, completing the Falcons shutout with 68 minutes of scoreless work. Senior Amanda Hevy (N. Brookfield, Mass./N. Brookfield) stopped eight shots in the first half effort for the AmCats.

Fitchburg State (2-1, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it visits WPI at 4:30 p.m. Anna Maria (0-2, 0-0 GNAC) will travel to Regis College on Thursday at 6 p.m.
