Fitchburg State Stunned By MCLA, 1-0

Kirouac stops four shots in Falcons first MASCAC loss of season

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 15, 2011) – The Fitchburg State women's soccer team saw its 11 game unbeaten streak come to end this evening as the Trailblazers of MCLA posted a 1-0 MASCAC victory at Elliot Field.

After 85 minutes of scoreless action, MCLA finally broke the game's scoring silence as freshman Janelle Stannard (Valley Falls, N.Y./Hoosic Valley Central) connected for her second goal of the season. Stannard made a brilliant play on the ball, wrapping the ball from ten yards out and hitting the inside portion of the net to the far side.

The Falcons pressured down the stretch, placing eight players in the box over the closing minutes to force a corner, but the Fitchburg State's last minute efforts fell just short as senior goaltender Jen Wehner (Hartwick, N.Y./Cooperstown) solidified the Trailblazers victory with five second half saves.

For the contest, Fitchburg State did post a 19-8 advantage in shots and a 4-2 margin in corners, but MCLA took made the most of its opportunities, posting three of its seven second half targets on net. Between the pipes, sophomore Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) registered four saves in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while Wehner stopped 13 saves in the victory for the Trailblazers.

Fitchburg State (10-2-1, 4-1-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Thursday as it travels to Emmanuel College at 7 p.m. MCLA (6-8-2, 2-2-1 MASCAC) will host Westfield State next Saturday at 1 p.m.
