Worcester State Takes Down Fitchburg State, 1-0

Lancers claim share of 2011 MASCAC Regular Season crown

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 29, 2011) – The Fitchburg State women’s soccer team suffered a tough 1-0 setback to Worcester State University in MASCAC action this afternoon.

With the victory, Worcester State clinches a share of the 2011 MASCAC Regular Season Championship, improving to 12-4-1 and 5-2-0 in the MASCAC. Despite the loss, Fitchburg State advances to the 2011 MASCAC Tournament with an overall record of 10-5-2 and a 4-3-0 mark in the conference. The Lancers earn the first seed for the tournament and will host the fourth-seeded Falcons on Wednesday night.

After a scoreless first half which witnessed play mainly between the 20's, Worcester State finally broke the scoring silence midway through the second period as senior Danielle Clifford (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) hit home for her sixth goal of the season. Lancer junior Brianne Beckman (Lakeville, Mass./Lakeville) initiated the scoring drive, taking a shot from the far right side. Sophomore keeper Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass./Leomisnter) snagged Beckman's strike with a diving save, but a loose ball rebound landed at the foot of Clifford who deposited her attempt to the back of the net.

Offense was a lack luster for Fitchburg State as Worcester held the Falcons to just eight shots in the contest. The Lancers maintained solid offensive pressure with 20 attempts throughout the game, including a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. In net, senior Angieszaka Sychtysz (Warren, Mass./Quabog) earned the victory with four saves for the Lancers, while Kirouac finished with 11 stops for the Falcons.
