Becker Rallies Past Fitchburg State, 2-1

Jamieson collects lone goal for the Falcons

LEICESTER, Mass. (September 11, 2012) – Sophomore Alycia Dery (Millville, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) notched the game winning marker with seven minutes remaining in regulation to lift Becker College past Fitchburg State, 2-1 in non-conference women's soccer action this afternoon.

Fitchburg State grabbed the lead midway through the opening stanza as junior Rachel Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) connected for her team leading third goal of the season. Jamieson tucked the ball past the out stretched arms of Hawks goalie Kaitlyn Rose (N. Attleboro, Mass./N. Attleboro) for the 1-0 margin heading into the break.

In the second half, Becker knotted the contest (1-1) when senior Caroline Plunkett (Belle Harbor, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) found the back of the net off an assist from sophomore Alyssa Bond (Thompson, Conn./Tourtellotte) in the 51st minute.

Becker dominated possession in the last 30 minutes of regulation, as a frenzy of activity on the offensive end led to several scoring chances that all seemed to come up just short. Fitchburg State nearly retook the lead in the 74th minute off a corner kick, leading to an excellent scoring chance for sophomore Jessica Sullivan (Milton, Mass./Milton) but Rose was up to the challenge this time.

The game appeared headed into overtime until Dery took advantage of a quick breakaway, finally finding daybreak and her Hawk-leading fifth goal of the season. With just 1:42 left on the clock, Fitchburg State sophomore Kayla Bridges (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) took the ball deep and was all alone as she charged the goal. Rose timed her move perfectly, coming up with the save to preserving the win.

Throughout the match, Becker out shot Fitchburg State 15-14, while the Falcons held a 6-2 margin in corner kicks. Between the pipes, junior Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) made five saves in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while Rose finished with eight stops for the Hawks in 90 minutes of work.

Fitchburg State (1-4-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to Bridgewater State University at 4:30 p.m. Becker (2-2-0, 0-0-0 NECC) will host Colby Sawyer on Saturday at 1 p.m.
