Fitchburg State Nips Emmanuel, 2-1

Mackewicz and Stone collect one goal apiece in Falcons first win

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 6, 2012) – Junior Nicole Stone (Webster, Mass./Bartlett) registered the game-winning tally in the 70th minute of action as the Fitchburg State women's soccer team defeated Emmanuel College, 2-1 in non-conference action at Elliot Field this evening.

Fitchburg State grabbed an early lead in the 13th minute of the match as freshman Rachel Mackewicz (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) notched her first collegiate goal at the 12:24 mark  Mackewicz received a feed from junior Rachel Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) and fired the ball into the right side of the net to put the Falcons up 1-0.

Fitchburg State maintained its one goal advantage through the halftime break, before doubling their lead (2-0) with just 20 minutes remaining in regulation. Stone gave Fitchburg State it's insurance marker, heading in a corner kick off the foot of sophomore Mikaela Foley (Jefferson, Mass./Wachusett Regional) for her first score of the season.

The Saints threatened in the second half and nearly knotted the score at 1-1 when senior Meghan Zerba (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) blasted a point blank shot on target, but Falcon goalkeeper Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) made a diving save to the far post to keep the score 1-0. Emmanuel finally broke its scoring silence in the 84th minute as sophomore Kelsie Dumas (Dalton, Mass./Wahconah Regional) tucked the ball inside the left post, resulting in the 2-1 final.

Emmanuel controlled play throughout the contest, out shooting Fitchburg State 27-13, while holding a slim 4-3 margin in corner kicks. Between the pipes, Kirouac registered 16 saves in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while freshman Jenna Marcello (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) made five stops for the Saints in 90 minute of work
