Manhattanville Slips Past Fitchburg State, 3-2

Jamieson nets two goals in Falcons second setback of the season

MANSFIELD, Conn. (September 1, 2012) – Junior Rachel Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) scored a pair of goals in second round action of the 2012 Warriors Classic but the Fitchburg State women’s soccer team fell to Manhattanville, 3-2 this evening.

Fitchburg State grabbed a 1-0 lead midway through the first half on Jamieson’s first goal of season as she lofted a shot from left side into the upper right corner of the net. The Falcons took a 2-0 lead roughly 11 minutes later when Jamieson connected for her second marker of the contest, rifling the ball past Valiants goalkeeper Grace Kraemer (Massapeque, N.Y./Massapeque) from 18 yards out.

In the second half, Manhattanville cut the deficit in half (2-1) in the 55th minute when freshman Christie DeMarco’s (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South) shot deflected off the post and into the net

The Valiants tied the score 2-2 as senior Sonia Occhiono’s (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School) corner kick found freshman Rebecca Breve Cardona (Tegheigalpa, N.Y./American School), who tucked the ball into the back of the net at the 66:52 mark.

Manhattanville completed the come-back in the 74th minute when senior Brittany Smith (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) connected for her second score of the season. With time winding down in the contest, Fitchburg State appeared to tie the game, but freshman Rachel Mackewicz’s (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) goal was nullified by an offside with less than one minute remaining.

For the contest, Mahattanville outshot Fitchburg State14-7, including an 11-4 margin in the second half, while limiting the Falcons just one corner kick. Between the pipes, junior Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) made four saves for the Falcons in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (0-2, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Thursday as it hosts Emmanuel College at 7 p.m. Manhattanville (2-0, 0-0 FC) will host Rensselaer in the opening round of the 2012 Valiant Classic on Friday at 7 p.m.
