MCLA Takes Down Fitchburg State, 1-0

Kirouac collects six saves for Fitchburg State

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. (October 6, 2012) – The Fitchburg State women's soccer team suffered a tough 1-0 setback to MCLA in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action this afternoon.

With the victory, MCLA improves to 5-6-0 on the season (2-2-0) MASCAC), while Fitchburg State falls to 2-10-0 on the year and 1-3-0 in the conference.

Following a scoreless first half, MCLA gained the lead in the 67th minute of play as junior Jennifer Ferrari (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) headed home a corner kick for her sixth marker of the season for the 1-0 lead. Junior Lindsay Borbolla (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich) sent the ball into classmate Brianna Dandurant (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) who headed the ball over to Ferrari for the 1-0 lead.

In the opening frame, Fitchburg State nearly grabbed the lead at the 4:08 mark as freshman Nicole Perez(Jamestown, R.I./North Kingstown) created a breakaway opportunity, but Trailblazer goalkeeper Danielle Heinsohn (Norfolk, Mass./Mount Alvernia) was able to make the save to keep the game deadlocked (0-0) heading into the break.

Throughout the contest, MCLA out shot Fitchburg State 13-7, while holding a 4-2 advantage in corners, Between the pipes, junior Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) registered six saves in the complete game effort for Fitchburg State, while Heinsohn stopped four shots for MCLA en-route to the shutout.

Fitchburg State (2-10-0, 1-3-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it visits Wellesley College at 4 p.m. MCLA (4-6-0, 2-2-0 MASCAC) will host Western New England College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
