UMass Boston Shuts Down Fitchburg State, 5-0

Ford registers career high 16 saves for the Falcons

BOSTON, Mass. (September 18, 2012) – Junior Tayla Andrews (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) notched five points on two goals and one assist as UMass Boston defeated Fitchburg State, 5-0 in non-conference women's soccer action this afternoon.

UMass Boston took the lead at the 15:37 mark as Andrews tallied her seventh goal of season for the 1-0 advantage. The Beacons doubled their lead (2-0) in the 25th minute of action when freshman Dani Beane (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) tucked the ball inside the far post, before adding an additional score late in the half to take 3-0 margin into intermission.

In the second half, UMass Boston upped its lead (4-0) in the 84th minute when Andrews took a feed from junior Julie Nutting (Rockland, Mass./Rockland) as she connected for her second marker of the contest. Sophomore Amanda Pugliese (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) capped the Beacons scoring roughly one minute later resulting in the 5-0 final.

Throughout the match, UMass Boston controlled play, out shooting Fitchburg State 43-4, while holding a 11-0 margin in corner kicks. Between the pipes, sophomore Kelsey Ford (Franconia, N.H./Profile School) registered a career high 16 saves in 86 minutes of work for the Falcons, while sophomore Kristen Spain (Quincy, Mass./Archbishop Williams) made one stop in the complete game effort for the Beacons.

Fitchburg State (1-5-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it hosts Westfield State University at 5 p.m. UMass Boston (6-0-0, 1-0-0 LEC) will visit Rhode Island College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
